I am reminded today of my friend Charles ("Chuck") Mendez. Besides his family, Chuck had two passions, being a New York City fireman and the New York Rangers.
At one time, Chuck was a banker but always wanted to be a fireman. He took the test and awaited the results. The day Chuck got the call, he picked up his things, left the Bank and was instantly transformed into a fireman.
Chuck was the leader of our hockey syndicate that owned 4 season tickets to the New York Rangers.
On 9/11 Chuck didn't get home that night. Come November it was apparent he was no longer with us and a memorial service was held. This was a bitter-sweet experience, bitter because he was no longer with us yet sweet because everybody that eulogized him felt the same way about him as I did. Chuck's unit, Ladder 7, were already on a call when the events of 9/11 commenced. The unit headed straight to the WTC and to Tower 2. We now know that Chuck and his crew mates perished when the tower collapsed. On New Years Eve 2002, Chuck's remains were found and a funeral was held.
