Jason Ward, a less than sparkling forward for the New York Rangers, was traded to the L. A. Kings for oft penalized Sean Avery and three prospects (2 unsigned).
Looking at TheHockeyRating.com rankings, this is a steal by the Rangers.
| Rank | Player | Posn | Games | Goals | Assists | Points | +/- | Penalty | TOI | Rating |
|---|
| 269 | SEAN AVERY | L | 55 | 10 | 18 | 28 | -10 | 116 | 16.51 | 84.67 |
| 508 | JASON WARD | R | 46 | 4 | 6 | 10 | -3 | 26 | 12.19 | 51.52 |
Avery has better statistics than Ward and earns a higher salary. So, if the deal needed padding you would think it would be the Rangers that had to make up the short fall. But the Rangers get a quality player, plus three prospects, in exchange for an also-ran.
